Battling the Cold

Dear Reader,

As we all know, winter is coming and with winter comes freezing temperatures. There are a few things that I like to do when it gets colder to prevent my skin and hair from drying out (hint: moisturizing!).  It is so important to keep your skin and lovely locks hydrated, especially in the winter months.

I don’t change my skin care routine that much. I like to stick to my routine so I don’t throw my skin off balance. I start my morning by washing my face with Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel (I used to use Lush Fresh Farmacy). Then, I use Clinique Clarifying Lotion all over my face, applied with a cotton ball. After that, I either use Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion or Dermalogica Active Moist. That ends my morning skincare routine. At night, when I shower, there are a few minor differences. Before I take a shower, I like to take off my makeup with a makeup wipe, my favorite is Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes in Pink Grapefruit. After washing my face, I like to exfoliate a few times a week. For awhile, I was using Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions Pore Refining Scrub. This month in my Birchbox, I received Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator and I started using that instead. It is awesome. It leaves your face so fresh and clean. It’s definitely going to become a part of my long-term routine. If you don’t want to buy a new product, you can make your own exfoliator at home using ingredients you already have. I like to mix honey and cinnamon for my face (I like to leave the mixture on my face for ten minutes and then gently rub it off in circles with water). You could also mix honey and turbinado raw sugar, but I would suggest to use this mixture on your body, not your face (it may be too rough for your face). Also a few times a week I like to do a face mask. My favorite brand is Montagne Jennesse. I love them because they are cruelty-free and are vegetarian approved. They have so many cool flavors and scents and they are super affordable.

Now for my hair care routine. I don’t wash my hair everyday. I wash it either every other day or every two days. When you skip washes (it’s actually healthier for your hair and scalp) you allow your hair to be hydrated by your natural oils, instead of stripping your strands of these oils. When I do wash it, I like to double wash it. I start with Johnson’s Baby Shampoo (this helps me wash out left over styling product and oils). Any light shampoo will work for your first wash. Then, I like to use natural shampoo and conditioner. I am currently using Whole Foods brand shampoo and conditioner. Jason and Alba Botanica are also great brands. I never stick with a set shampoo and conditioner combo, I usually buy whatever is the cheapest out of the products I know and love. I try to opt for natural and cruelty-free products. When I condition my hair, I try to really work the product into the ends and let it sit for a few minutes. Once I get out of the shower, I like to use a leave-in conditioner. I really enjoy It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Lite.  I normally let my hair air dry. Anytime I use heat on it, I do use a heat protectant. Any brand will do. The day after I wash my hair or if I see that my strands are dehydrated, I like to put oil on my ends. I’ve recently been using Aura Cacia Restoring Rosehip Oil or I’ll use any good coconut oil, which you can get at any grocery store. I take a drop and work it through my ends. Occasionally, I like to do a hair mask. My favorite is ORS Hair Mayonnaise. Another thing I LOVE is the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) 5-in-1 Styling Treatment.

Now onto everywhere else, I like to put lotion on every time I come out of the shower. My favorite is Bath and Body Works Ultra Shea Body Cream. It is a thick product and really keeps your skin hydrated so it’s perfect for colder temperatures. My favorite is Vanilla Bean Noel. On my hands, I’ll use any other Bath and Body Works lotion. In my Birchbox this month, I got Jane Iredale HandDrink. I do not like the smell, but it’s growing on me. If you like vintage florally scents, you will love this product. It is a very lightweight lotion but gets the job done well. I would purchase it because of how effective it is, despite me not liking the scent.

That’s all for now. I hope some of this was helpful. Thanks for reading!

xoxo,

Victoria
